Originally a Rodley Wheelers C.C. trophy. The Bettis Trophy is a magnificent Silver Cup approximately 15cms in diameter plus handles, standing 22cm tall on a two-level plinth. It has been retrospectively engraved.
In 1973 when the association found itself in need of a trophy for the Veterans B.A.R. George Bettis presented this impressive cup to the association which he had won outright as a member of the Elite C.C.
Thankfully our awards are now permanent otherwise if they became the property of a consecutive three-time winners we would have needed to replace them many times over.
George was a long time member of The Bedfordshire Road C.C. He was a lifelong cyclist achieving national honours when becoming National 24-hour champion in 1972 & 76. Known throughout his long career as a hard rider and long distance specialist George recorded wins in time trials and road races, becoming amateur Road Race Champion. One year winning all three 12-hour T.T.’s he entered.
In later years he was also an accomplished veteran runner.
